HOLIDAY HORRORS - A Seasonal Compilation

Here's a Christmas compilation I threw together from various sources, at different bitrates (from 128k to 320k) and a couple here and there are of varying quality, depending on the source material. Songs are alternated with some offbeat dialogue excerpts relating to the holiday season. Link is in the comment area.
NOTE: The last track, an excerpted Christmas scene from "Female Trouble" (one of my all-time favorite Christmas scenes!) contains the "F" word twice, which is why I put it last in the selection. It can be left off when burning a CD. The track listing below is the order they should be in...I simply numbered the files in order but kept the original album's track number in the tag info.

Scrooge (1970) - The Complete Orchestral Score by Leslie Bricusse

A belated Christmas present (didn't get this posted in time this year for Christmas Day). Ripped from the surround channel of the DVD, here's the entire music score (minus vocals on the songs) by Leslie Bricusse. This post is dedicated to Anton Rodgers, my favorite performer in the movie, who plays Tom Jenkins (the soup vendor) in the film. The highlight of his entire career has to be Anton performing the Oscar-nominated song "Thank You Very Much" while dancing on top of Scrooge's coffin in the film. Anton passed away two years ago on December 1, 2007. He will be missed, but certainly not forgotten.

A MERRY MONSTER CHRISTMAS (1964)

A holiday/horror classic from 1964 (I believe this was originally posted by Dr. Terror last year, so thanks for the LP rip). The original vinyl version, and the download files have corrected tag info (some information was missing and other info was off), and the download has enhanced cover images (seen here...I tried filling in the colors and enhancing the images a bit). Vinyl LP rip at 256k. Link is in the comment area.

UPDATED DOWNLOAD: The original download link (the original rip) is still in the comment area. I've also added a second download link for an enhanced version I did of the tracks. Included were a volume equalization (some tracks had much lower volume than others), further noise reduction, removal of excessive empty space at the beginning and ends of some tracks (some had as much as 5 seconds of emptiness at the beginning and/or ends), a slight boost in the bass level (this old recording was rather flat and tinny-sounding), and the final MP3 files were done at 320k for the best reproduction of the original rip, and with J-Stereo enhancement.

2011 HALLOWEEN COUNTDOWN 21 - ZACHERLE 1988 HALLOWEEN SPECIAL

A fun 1988 radio special hosted by Zacherle on WCBS FM 101 in New York. Expect some imperfections in this....after all, I recorded it 19 years ago....and there's only one song missing (MIchael Jackson's "Thriller", but you'll still hear Zacherle's introduction to the tune) because I got to a point during the recording when I needed to change tapes, and at the time since I had Thriller on CD, I decided to cut away at that point. It was more important to me to get everything else and all the Zacherle stuff. I broke this down pretty much according to the show segments or where it seemed there was a good point to make a split in the files (most of the segments are between 13 and 15 minutes long, give or take). There's no breaks between each tune or show segment, so it gives more of the feel of listening to the show as it aired (commercials have been edited out years ago). There's two downloads, one for each half of the show/disc...Part 1 is 73:39, and Part 2 is 73:30. Total time is 2 hours and 27 minutes. I suggest burning in a program which won't leave breaks between the files, or disabling such a function if the option to do so exists in the program you use. This will allow the discs to be listened to without pauses or interruptions between the segments/files, but there will still be track indexes between each one. Cassette tape rip at 320k. Here's something I managed to save several years ago from the old Cartoon Network site's Scooby-Doo area. Print these monster masks out on card stock, cut them out and tie a string on, and have your kids (or yourself) go as Scooby monsters! These three are based on the monsters seen in the episode "A Gaggle Of Galloping Ghosts". Just click on each one to get/download the larger version for printing out.

Here's something different for this blog (and for Halloween)...a set of four animated ecards from 1999 featuring the Universal monsters (except Dracula). There are individual ones for Frankenstein, the Creature, and the Hunchback, and all of the monsters (except for Dracula, but including the Mummy, Wolfman, and Phantom) are seen in the first one. The screen capture here shows a frame from each of the four .exe files....after downloading and unzipping, simply click on each file to have it open up and play (the various Play, Stop, and Quit option buttons for them can be seen on the image here). This set is complete....there were four of these back then.

The cover seen here is from the 8-track release of this Goofy Gold novelty song collection, which also featured a selection of horror sounds.....the rip I have here is from the cassette tape version (which had a different selection of songs) with the horror sounds on Side 2 of the tape. The rip here is the entire 24 minutes of the sound effects as one track, not individually separated, at 320k.

I saved these two flyers from the Ogden Theater in Denver, Co. back in the early 80's (and have kept them in surprisingly great shape by keeping them stored away). I think they are from 1982 and 1983, but not certain which is from which year (although I think the white flyer came first date-wise). One might even be from 1984, but again I'm uncertain about the dates and exactly which is which. I do know they one advertising the contest is one I came in as a runner-up (as Brad Majors, which I did in the floorshow at the Ogden for a couple of years) because I got a movie poster and calendar (both of which I still have) and two passes to the Ogden (unless my memory is going and that was another event such as an anniversary of RHPS at the Ogden, which I also recall attending). These are large enough to print out and look great.

These are from 1975 and were available in boxes of Honeycomb cereal. They also glow in the dark! I didn't have the Wolfman poster (had to find the picture elsewhere), but I scanned the other monsters which are large enough to print out a good size and have look good. The "glow" versions were captured with a digital camera and using a blacklight to show off the glowing effect.

HOCUS POCUS - The Complete Score by John Debney

I finally got around to ripping this from the surround channels of the DVD....here is John Debney's complete score at 320k....a total of 44 tracks containing 30 minutes more music (73 min. total) than the promo-only release. Contains music-only/reduced-vocals versions of some of the songs in the film. I only titled those tracks which I was able to identify as being the same music pieces found on the promo-only release of the score. Link is in the comments. This is how it aired when Cartoon Network compiled all the previously aired segments into short film form, and includes a couple of promo/intro spots. Gotta love Freddy sitting in the woods, unshaven and rocking back and forth in a freaked-out panic!

An original music video I edited together on VHS over 15 years ago, set to Zacherle's "GhoulView Commercial" song. Since I can redo this digitally by computer and from DVD sources now (instead of the VHS and laserdisc sources of this first one), I may get around to completely redoing this from scratch to have better quality (and also get the sound in stereo from a CD release of the song).

Here it is....the redux version. Much higher quality than the original due to better sources.

There's a couple of neat little pieces of artwork,
some fun(ny) messages, and several sounds you can play by clicking on the various buttons. Screen captures here show the two main menus in this fun program utility. The kids will enjoy playing around with this near Halloween....or drive you batty playing the sounds over and over again!

Not sure if this will work or not....never tried posting something like this before. Here's a CD-ROM game from the late 90's, a mini-cd which I believe was packaged in VHS boxes of Universal horror movies. Not sure because I got this in a trade. Also never tried posting in this format before....the download file is a zip file containing the disc scan seen here (you can use it to do a label if you wish) and an ISO (disc image) file of the game. The ISO can be burned to a CD with any burning software that supports the format (and there's several out there). Have fun hunting the Creature! Here's something fun with the Universal monsters from a few years ago off the Virginia State Lottery site. I managed to save this matching game before the site went down. It's one of those things where you click on each square one at a time to finding two of the same image. When you do, the squares reveal part of the photo of a Universal monster. When you complete the puzzle, the entire image is revealed. There's a different monster and caption each time you play, and most of the Universal monsters are featured as the final photo. Two of the links in the lower left corner of the game don't work right, since the game isn't being played on the website it came from. "Pause Music" actually refers to the wolf howling sound you hear....doesn't work now. You get the sound each time you get a correct matching pair of images. The "Quit Game" link will close that browser window the game is in. To download this to play offline, there's a download link in the Comment area for an .exe version I made. Have fun playing, and this also might be a fun one for the kids!

THE MIDNIGHT HOUR (1985) - complete soundtrack

REDUX TIME: Here it is....the expanded version of the soundtrack, with Brad Fiedel's complete score and all the songs! A couple of modifications to the tracks have been made: I excluded the Phil Phillips version of "Sea of Love", because after listening very carefully to the movie again a few nights ago, I determined that version of the song is not in the movie...the remake by Del Shannon is (the character of Sandy even makes a comment about it being a remake), and I realized that the two tracks "Vampire Dentist" and "On The Rooftop" never should have been split apart in the first place because the music for those two scenes is a continuous piece...it goes back and forth between the two, so in this modified version it's a single track. The additional score tracks by Brad Fiedel were gotten from the original Vidmark Video VHS release, which actually had an isolated music & effects track (dialogue was on the left channel of the HiFi sound, and the music/effects were on the right channel), and there are some sound effects which I don't think are all that intrusive....and now you get more of Fiedel's score. ADDITION: A rare, brief promo spot for the film is at the bottom of this post. It features the Wilson Pickett tune "In The Midnight Hour".

Phantom Of The Opera - Walter Murphy (1978)

I've had this cassette for a good many years now, and wanted to rip it to post here, but unfortunately have had a problem I can't get around. Part way through the playback, the tape begins to drag and either creates a "wobbling" sound, or the auto shutoff on my tape deck engages and the playback stops. I've attempted everything I can think of, from removing the tape reels from the original shell and putting them into a couple of different ones in an attempt to get around a possibility of the original tape shell being warped or something, and also have tried playing it back in two different players....but no dice. I can't figure out what's wrong with this tape, unless it has something to do with age or something which has happened to the tape itself. I did manage to rip the first two tracks from Side 1: "Introduction" and "The Phantom Of Your Dreams" at 320k...the link is in the comment area. It segues immediately from the first track into the second, so the MP3 is a single file of both pieces. I have really enjoyed this album over the years....it's great dance music from an era which also spawned the likes of other people like Meco. This particular album is actually quite good (IMHO), because it does manage to convey the essence of the Phantom story both through the music, the lyrics, and the track titles (which can be seen on the scan here of the cassette insert). If anyone happens to have this and can provide me with a good rip to post (as well as for myself to continue to enjoy), please let me know. Even though I'd love the "clean-ness" of a tape rip, I'd settle for a decent vinyl LP rip, or better still, a rip from any import CD that might exist which I might be unaware of, or if anyone has any idea as to how I can get around this playback problem I'm having, please let me know. THANKS!

Susanna Foster, a singer and 1940s leading lady whose most famous role was the terrorized prima donna in the first talking version of "Phantom of the Opera," died Saturday of heart failure at the Lillian Booth Actors Home in Englewood, N.J., according to publicist Dale Olson. She was 84.

Foster costarred with Claude Rains and Nelson Eddy in the 1943 Academy Award-winning remake of the 1925 silent screen version of the macabre melodrama that starred Lon Chaney. It was one of a dozen films Foster made before virtually disappearing from the screen in 1945.

After leaving Hollywood, she performed on stage, including a 1948 Los Angeles Civic Light Opera production of "The Naughty Marietta," one of composer Victor Herbert's best-known operettas. Foster performed opposite her soon-to-be husband, popular baritone Wilbur Evans.

Foster was born Suzanne DeLee Flanders Larson on Dec. 6, 1924, in Chicago and grew up in Minneapolis. When she was only 3, she won attention for her ability to mimic popular performers, such as vaudevillian Eddie Foy and actresses Bebe Daniels and Jeanette MacDonald.

At 5 she was performing regularly on radio, helping to support her family during the Depression with her earnings of $5 a week.

At 12 she landed a contract with MGM, where studio chief Louis B. Mayer viewed her as a potential successor to singing sensation Deanna Durbin, who was leaving the studio. Foster was groomed for stardom alongside Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland.

She was offered the lead in "National Velvet" but turned it down because she wanted only singing roles.

MGM soon dropped Foster, and the part eventually went instead to the young Elizabeth Taylor, whose luminous performance became Hollywood legend.

After losing her MGM contract, Foster signed with Paramount, where at 14 she made her film debut opposite Mary Martin and Allan Jones in "The Great Victor Herbert" (1939), a biopic about the renowned composer.

At 19 she jumped to Universal to star in "Phantom of the Opera." New York Times critic Bosley Crowther wrote that she played and sang "quite pleasingly" and considered her performance one of the few bright notes in the movie.

"She had a kind of open quality, a warmth and a vulnerability and sweetness, that came through in addition to the beauty of her voice," Miles Kreuger, president of the Los Angeles-based Institute of the American Musical, said Monday.

She made several more pictures at Universal, including a horror movie called "The Climax" (1944) with Boris Karloff, but quit Hollywood in 1945 to raise her two younger sisters and take them away from their alcoholic mother.

After marrying Evans, Foster performed with him in musicals and operettas. They had two sons, Phillip and Michael. She is survived by Michael and two grandchildren.

Kreuger, who knew Foster for many years, described her as a bright but emotionally fragile woman who struggled to raise her sons on her own after her marriage to Evans ended in divorce in 1956.

She held a succession of low-paying jobs, including switchboard operator and receptionist. At one point she was homeless and lived in her car.

She dreamed of a Hollywood comeback but made only one film after 1945, appearing in a 1992 remake of the 1945 cult classic "Detour."

Foster was cremated, and plans for a memorial service are pending. Donations in her name may be sent to the Actors Fund, 729 7th Ave., New York, NY 10019.

LOS ANGELES – Forrest J Ackerman, the sometime actor, literary agent, magazine editor and full-time bon vivant who discovered author Ray Bradbury and was widely credited with coining the term "sci-fi," has died. He was 92.

Ackerman died Thursday of heart failure at his Los Angeles home, said Kevin Burns, head of Prometheus Entertainment and a trustee of Ackerman's estate.

Although only marginally known to readers of mainstream literature, Ackerman was legendary in science-fiction circles as the founding editor of the pulp magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland. He was also the owner of a huge private collection of science-fiction movie and literary memorabilia that for years filled every nook and cranny of a hillside mansion overlooking Los Angeles.

"He became the Pied Piper, the spiritual leader, of everything science fiction, fantasy and horror," Burns said Friday.

Every Saturday morning that he was home, Ackerman would open up the house to anyone who wanted to view his treasures. He sold some pieces and gave others away when he moved to a smaller house in 2002, but he continued to let people visit him every Saturday for as long as his health permitted.

"My wife used to say, 'How can you let strangers into our home?' But what's the point of having a collection like this if you can't let people enjoy it?" an exuberant Ackerman told The Associated Press as he conducted a spirited tour of the mansion on his 85th birthday.

His collection once included more than 50,000 books, thousands of science-fiction magazines and such items as Bela Lugosi's cape from the 1931 film "Dracula."

His greatest achievement, however, was likely discovering Bradbury, author of the literary classics "Fahrenheit 451" and "The Martian Chronicles." Ackerman had placed a flyer in a Los Angeles bookstore for a science-fiction club he was founding and a teenage Bradbury showed up.

Later, Ackerman gave Bradbury the money to start his own science-fiction magazine, Futuria Fantasia, and paid the author's way to New York for an authors meeting that Bradbury said helped launch his career.

"I hadn't published yet, and I met a lot of these people who encouraged me and helped me get my career started, and that was all because of Forry Ackerman," the author told the AP in 2005.

Later, as a literary agent, Ackerman represented Bradbury, Isaac Asimov and numerous other science-fiction writers.

He said the term "sci-fi" came to him in 1954 when he was listening to a car radio and heard an announcer mention the word "hi-fi."

"My dear wife said, 'Forget it, Forry, it will never catch on,'" he recalled.

Soon he was using it in Famous Monsters of Filmland, the magazine he helped found in 1958 and edited for 25 years.

Ackerman himself appeared in numerous films over the years, usually in bit parts. His credits include "Queen of Blood," "Dracula vs. Frankenstein," "Amazon Women on the Moon," "Vampirella," "Transylvania Twist," "The Howling" and the Michael Jackson "Thriller" video. More recently, he appeared in 2007's "The Dead Undead" and 2006's "The Boneyard Collection."

Ackerman returned briefly to Famous Monsters of Filmland in the 1990s, but he quickly fell out with the publisher over creative differences. He sued and was awarded a judgment of more than $375,000.

Forrest James Ackerman was born in Los Angeles on Nov. 24, 1916. He fell in love with science-fiction, he once said, when he was 9 years old and saw a magazine called Amazing Stories. He would hold onto that publication for the rest of his life.

Ackerman, who had no children, was preceded in death by his wife, Wendayne.

Okay, here's something really offbeat for this blog, but also really rare....it's a video of a 1980 demo disc for Magnavox's laserdisc player called Magnavision. There are several Universal titles on MCA Discovision seen throughout the video, but specifically keep an eye out for when the host mentions the 1931 Dracula with Bela Lugosi....what is shown onscreen is not the laserdisc sleeve (from probably the rarest of all the Universal horror titles released on Discovision at that time), but rather the Aurora plastic model of Dracula, and painted somewhat oddly with popping bug-eyes! Also keep an eye out for the footage of the fahion show models....one of the models is none other than Grace Jones! My own recording from the demo disc in my collection....bear with any imperfections due to the age of the disc (after all it's 28 years old) and the then-inherent problems due to imperfect manufacturing (known as "laser rot"). This actually turned out pretty well, and I'll work on getting a downloadable AVI video if anyone is interested enough in this.

Updated and revised download of this classic in high-quality 320k rip from CD, with J-Stereo enhancement...you'l never hear it better than this! Variations of the front and back covers are included in the download. This was reissued on CD two years ago with the cover seen below. Note to the curious: There is NO difference between the material in the rip presented here and rips posted elsewhere, except for the fact of the source material here being from a commercially-available CD, and other rips being from the old original 60's vinyl LP....the recordings are IDENTICAL (I have rips of the old LP for comparison, and they're the same as this)....the difference here is that my rip is from a CD (further comments below the CD cover image).
There's a normal amount of analog hiss due to the age of the recording, but this sounds so crisp and clear, although it was likely mastered from a very clean vinyl LP, it really sounds as though it was remastered from the original studio tape recordings! Another classic 60's album (although not specifically Universal-related, but the cover images are all the Universal monsters). Link is in the comments area.

These are the rarer, original 1931 trailers for both Universal classics, not the more commonly-seen Realart reissue trailers. The DRACULA trailer has footage of Edward Van Sloan's screen test (the mirror-smashing scene, which is quite different from the final film), and the FRANKENSTEIN trailer has two shots not seen in the final film (the monster getting up off the lab floor after strangling Dr. Waldman, and a shot of the monster strangling Henry on the mountainside).
